Sometime in the mid 80’s (details are fuzzy) Bert and Belle Markovitz of the Deli Smoker were cast in a commercial for Vlasic® Deli Dills. They were flown to New York City, supplied with a Plaza Suite, a limo at their command, and a call time of 7 am the next day. They got to visit New York for the first time in 25 years, the city where they first married and lived; where Bert learned English, about becoming an American, and the Deli trade. And this visit was all on someone else’s dime! They had a wonderful time and it was a ...
Best. Elvis. Ever.
Hilarity from the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson!
I don’t know if Richard Lewis ever performed at the Deli Smoker. This is a TV clip of him, and has lots of references from the time period. It is the 6th Annual Young Comedians Show from 1981. Funny classic neurotic Richard Lewis! Enjoy! Richard Lewis stuff... Richard is also in many funny episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm. They often go to Deli’s! Could you imagine the fun Curb could have with a meshuganah cast of characters at the Deli Smoker?

They had a wonderful time and it was a trip down memory lane.
Bert said the shoot itself was easy, only a few takes were needed and the director had what he wanted; everyone said he was a natural! No doubt, he had charisma. And that mustache!
They were paid well for the day, and of course received residuals for a year while the commercial played. Interestingly, it never played in the LA market, though we got reports of plenty of viewings from friends in other states. One friend managed to grab a copy of it on VHS, and that is what this video is sourced from.
DeliSmoker.com is happy to have this copy, though if a better copy is available it will be found!
